The Journey

Undergoing Rhinoplasty can be a challenging decision. My role as the surgeon is to understand, inform and support you through this process. Your journey can be broken down into three stages- Consultation, Surgery and Aftercare.

At all stages, you will be seen by Prof. Sama.

Consultation: (Charge £200/-)

Undergoing a Rhinoplasty procedure can feel like a BIG step. You may have fears and doubts about the possible outcome. The consultation is the most important part of this journey and is structured in the following phases.

Phase 1: A face-to-face consultation.

  • Understand your main concerns
  • Clinical examination of nose and face
  • Preliminary discussion of possible changes that can be made
  • Information provided on Rhinoplasty surgery, risks and complication
  • Photographs taken

Phase 2: Review and Morphed images.

  • Image morphing technology to communicate realistic changes
  • Active involvement in the decision-making process
  • Review of previous surgical outcomes
  • Morphed images shared electronically
  • Quotation for the procedure

Phase 3: Decision.

  • Review and mutual agreement on planned changes
  • Specific risks and complications discussed
  • Postoperative plan and care discussed
  • Potential dates for surgery

Surgery: (Cost as quoted at 2nd Consultation- Includes all post operative care for 1 year)

  • Preassessment by hospital team approximately a week prior to surgery (can be face to face or remote)
  • Specific instructions regarding the surgery shared by Prof Sama’s team (do’s and don’t’s)
  • Seen by Prof Sama and Anaesthetist before and after your surgery
  • All postoperative instructions and follow-up appointments confirmed

Aftercare: (No additional charges related to this)

  • Reviewed at 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months and 12 months after surgery
  • Progress monitored with photographs
  • Discharged at 12 months when you are satisfied with the outcome

Morphing

Morphing of photographs of your nose is an essential part of the Prof Sama’s consultation process and a key tool for effective communication. Lots of individuals struggle to visualise what their surgical outcome may look like. They are often fixated on the most obvious deformity (like the hump) or have misconceptions of what changes they would like based on images they have seen on social media and internet. Using computer software, your pre-surgery images are amended to present realistic outcomes that could be achieved with surgery. The images are presented and sequenced to allow you to understand the different changes that are planned or can be considered. These images are not a guarantee of end result, but a tool to assist communication and understanding.

This allows you to

  • Visualise what changes can be made
  • Understanding of the realistic outcomes of surgery for you and your concerns
  • Understanding of how small sequence of changes results in a greater overall improvement
  • Involvement in the decision making of the changes to be considered
  • Understanding of the degree of change that can be made with different approaches and techniques- e.g., Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty in reduction of tip projection
  • Eliminate misconceptions acquired from social media and internet

These Morphed images are shared with you via email to give you adequate time for consideration and consultation with trusted family and friends.

Prof Sama will show you images of the morphed planned outcome and the final outcome of previous patients who have had surgery with him. This will give you a prospective on the degree of variation that may occur between the planned morphed images and the real surgical outcome.

FAQs

1Is Rhinoplasty for me?
We are all born with some imperfections. Most, we learn to live with. However, when you look at yourself in the mirror or at your photographs, and your attention remains focused  on your nose, then Rhinoplasty surgery is something to consider. Rhinoplasty is about changing a few specific aspects of the nose, with sensible and realistic expectations. On the other hand if you are of the opinion- “I don’t like my nose at all and want it completely changed” or want it to look like some celebrity, then your understanding and expectations from Rhinoplasty are unrealistic, and I would counsel you against considering surgery.
2What kind of changes can be achieved?
Numerous changes can be made to your nose. The nose can be straightened, narrowed, humps reduced, tip of your nose turned up or down, improvements in the definition of the tip, change in the nostril shape or size etc etc. However, we would not set out to change all these aspects in everyone’s nose. A successful rhinoplasty is a meeting of minds- yours and the surgeons. You need to be clear about what aspects of the nose you would like to change and the surgeon should be honest about what kind of changes can be made. Only when the two understand and meet in the midline, is it appropriate to proceed to surgery. The mantra is – “realistic expectations”.
3What can go wrong in Rhinoplasty surgery
Fortunately, Rhinoplasty is safe surgery and not associated with serious or life threatening consequences. In the immediate post-operation period, there is a potential risk of bleeding and infections, which is usually less than 2%. The risks are reduced with the use of antibiotics and appropriate surgical techniques. The patient’s worst fear is that they won’t like what their nose looks like after surgery. The commonest cause - poor understanding and communication.  The patient may have had a lack of understanding of the changes planned and/or the surgeon wasn’t clear in making the patient understand what changes were planned. In my practice, surgery is never considered till that understanding and communication has been achieved. That may take two consultations or more. The use of clear simple language, photo morphing technology to assist understanding of the changes planned, and adequate time for consideration are cornerstones to ensure adequate understanding.
